We are excited to announce that the Choi Lab has been awarded a new NIH R01 grant titled "Structural Basis of HIV-1 Rev Response Element and Rev Assembly."
HIV relies on a highly specific interaction between the viral Rev protein and the Rev response element (RRE) RNA to export partially spliced and unspliced viral RNAs from the nucleus, a critical step in viral replication. Despite its essential role in the HIV life cycle, the RRE-Rev complex remains an underexplored target for antiviral therapy. This project will determine the structure of the RRE, elucidate the mechanism of Rev assembly on the RRE, and develop new RNA- and protein-based inhibitors to disrupt the RRE-Rev interaction.
